Hyperlogy Accompanies NAPAS in Successfully Upgrading the NAPAS 2.0 National Instant Payment System

Hyperlogy, in collaboration with technology partner PingCAP, has successfully completed the project “Comprehensive Upgrade of the NAPAS 24/7 National Instant Payment System (IBFT)” managed by NAPAS – the core infrastructure of Vietnam’s digital payment ecosystem.

IBFT System – The Foundation of Vietnam’s Digital Economy

Amidst the strong growth in financial transaction demand, the 24/7 Instant Payment system (IBFT) operated by National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS) has become a vital infrastructure of the banking sector. The system currently processes 180 million transactions per day, with an average annual growth rate of 60%.

One of the most popular applications is VietQR – the QR code money transfer method integrated into most Mobile Banking apps in Vietnam. VietQR has become a familiar payment method for citizens and is gradually expanding to the region (VietQR Global).

To meet this explosive growth demand, NAPAS collaborated with Hyperlogy and technology partner PingCAP (TiDB) to implement the NAPAS 2.0 project, aiming for a comprehensive upgrade in performance, architecture, and scalability.

NAPAS System Challenges

  • Massive transaction volume: over 180 million transactions/day and continuing rapid growth.
  • Real-time requirements: ensuring instant, uninterrupted money transfers.
  • Flexible scalability: the old system was based on a centralized architecture, required specialized hardware, and lacked flexibility in expansion.
  • Zero Downtime: With two Data Centers, every 6 months, NAPAS switches the main site to test information security policies. Each switch required operators to follow a complex process, causing around 30 minutes of downtime. This did not meet the Zero Downtime objective that NAPAS pursued.

NAPAS 2.0 Implementation

In this project, Hyperlogy migrated the entire database to TiDB – a next-generation distributed database platform.

Next-generation Software Architecture

  • Flexible scalability: Expansion only requires adding application or database nodes, easily deployable on Cloud, On-premise, or Serverless environments (Docker/K8S).
  • DC–DC–DR Architecture (Multi-Data Center): The system is deployed on 2 Active-Active DCs, with the capability to upgrade to a DC–DC–DR model. If one DC fails, the other ensures continuous operation, achieving Zero Downtime and Zero Data Loss.
  • HTAP (Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing): Enables simultaneous OLTP and OLAP processing within a single database, helping optimize operating costs.
  • Simplifies configuration, reduces operating costs, and increases real-time data analytics performance.

New Functionalities of NAPAS 2.0

  • New features such as Cross-border Payment, Reference Identification, etc., support cross-border transactions as well as simplify reconciliation.

Key Achievements

  • Outstanding performance: After the upgrade, the system can handle more than 7 TIMES the previous load, reaching up to 1.4 billion transactions/day.
  • Cloud-Native architecture: Seamless scalability by adding application or database nodes, running effectively on standard PC Servers, Cloud, Docker/K8S, without depending on expensive specialized hardware.
  • TiDB with HTAP: combining OLTP transaction processing and OLAP analytics within one system, reducing costs and optimizing operations.
  • New features: Cross-border Payment, Reference Identification, etc., enhancing user experience and meeting market demands.
  • Ensured continuity and security:
    • Deployed under DC–DC Active-Active model, ensuring continuous operations.
    • Integrated centralized monitoring, ensuring stability and security.
    • Compliant with international standards PCI DSS, ISO 27001, guaranteeing Zero Data Loss.
